The Passages was created by Israeli artist Dani Karavan pays homage to Walter Benjamin, it was inaugurated on 15 May 1994.
Walter Benjamin is a Jewish German philosopher who committed suicide in Portbou while fleeing the Nazis and the Vichy regime.
Inspiration from artist:
Karavan felt that the whirlpools on the coastline beneath the cemetery the turbulent life of the philosopher. He therefore created a steel tunnel leading down through the steep cliff toward to the sea. On the glass wall at the end of the tunnel, facing the waves below,a text by Walter Benjamin is sand blasted in English, German,Spanish and Catalonian..
